Badminton is a sport for all and a sport for life! At Badminton Canterbury, we are committed to making the game inclusive and accessible for everyone.

 

Weekly Para Badminton Coaching Session

We offer a dedicated weekly coaching session for players with a physical disability, open to participants aged 8 and over. Whether you are an experienced player or trying badminton for the first time, we welcome you to join us!

Session Details:

 

Experienced players (15 years and above)

📅 When: Thursdays, 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM (during school terms)

📍 Where: 220 Pages Road, Wainoni (Fully accessible venue)

👩‍🏫 Coach: Carrie Wilson – BWF Para International Player & BWF Level 1 Qualified Coach

 

Beginner players (8 Years and above)

📅 When: Thursdays, 5.30 – 6.30 PM (during school terms)

📍 Where: 220 Pages Road, Wainoni (Fully accessible venue)

👩‍🏫 Coach: Carrie Wilson – BWF Para International Player & BWF Level 1 Qualified Coach

 

Whether you use a chair or play standing, we would love to have you on board! We do have one sports chair available for loan use.

 

Inclusive Shuttle Time Programmes

For younger athletes, our Shuttle Time programmes provide an inclusive environment to develop badminton skills. These sessions cater to different abilities, but we recommend contacting us beforehand to discuss individual needs. Please note that our Wigram Shuttletime location does not permit wheelchairs.

 

Para Badminton Pathways & Opportunities

Badminton Canterbury collaborates with Badminton New Zealand and Badminton Oceania to develop competitive opportunities for players with a disability. Para Badminton is an official Paralympic Sport, with it’s debut taking place in Tokyo 2020.

 

Para Badminton Classifications

Competitive Para Badminton is divided into six classifications:

  1. Wheelchair 1 (WH 1): Players require a wheelchair and have impairment in both lower limbs and trunk function.
  2. Wheelchair 2 (WH 2): Players require a wheelchair and have impairment in one or both lower limbs, with minimal or no trunk impairment.
  3. Standing Lower 3 (SL 3): Players must play standing and have impairment in one or both lower limbs, affecting balance when walking or running.
  4. Standing Lower 4 (SL 4): Players must play standing and have a lesser impairment than SL 3, with minimal balance issues.
  5. Standing Upper (SU 5): Players have impairment in the upper limbs.
  6. Short Stature (SH 6): Players have a short stature due to a genetic condition (e.g., dwarfism).
