2021 Schedule of Events

Badminton Canterbury runs a selection of tournaments and social events throughout the year.  In addition, many of our clubs host their own events for their members.  There’s something for everyone here!

Some general information:
  • Sanctioned events are events that are sanctioned by Badminton NZ.  Players competing in these will be required to pay a Badminton NZ player levy when entering.  Seeding is done in accordance with Badminton NZ player points, and players in these events are eligible for Badminton NZ ranking points.  Typically we would only sanction championship events (Canterbury Open, and Under 15 / 17 / 19 Canterbury Age Group Champs)
  • We have endeavoured to provide a guideline of who should enter with each event.  This largely relates back to interclub grades as a standard.  If you haven’t played interclub before, then ask someone at your club who has played and they may be able to give you an idea, or get in touch with us and ask.
  • Some events are TEAM events.  You can either enter as a team, or we can try to place you in a team.  Usually the team events run over a number of weeks (eg Summer League, Interclub, Pre-season Doubles), and you will need to provide a fill in if you are unable to play.
  • All our tournaments are structured in a way that players will get a minimum of 2 games in each code they enter (ie 2 games of singles, or 2 games of doubles), this is done through either plate draws for those who lose their first game, or round robin qualification games.  The exact format is decided when we have final entry numbers so we can work the schedule out to suit the time available.

Age restrictions on events
  • Anyone can enter Senior or Open events
  • Juniors are under 19 / 17 / 15 / 13
  • Masters are 35 years old or above
  • Vets are 50 years old or above
  • Super Vets are 60 years old or above.

Clarification – if you are 14 you can enter Under 15s or any older age group.  Similarly, if you are say 54, you can enter Masters and Vets events.  Each event page has full information about this.

To avoid clashes in events, Badminton Canterbury sets their calendar after Badminton NZ have published theirs, and Mainland (South Island associations) has set theirs.  The Canterbury calendar is usually set in December for the following year, and the dates will be updated on here.  Most of the tournaments are held approximately at the same time each year, so this should be used as a guideline of events for the following year.  You can also view Badminton NZ events on their website.  For details on other Mainland events, you will need to view the relevant associations website: SouthlandOtagoWest Coast
